Guillain Barre Syndrome as a Complication of COVID-19: A Systematic Review

BACKGROUND: In January 2020, the first case of Guillain Barre syndrome (GBS) due to COVID-19 was documented in China. GBS is known be postinfectious following several types infections. Although causality can only proven through large epidemiological studies, we intended study this association by a thorough review literature. METHODS: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and Google scholar included all papers with English or Spanish full text original data patients recent COVID infection. Variables interest were demographics, diagnostic investigations, latency between arboviral neurological symptoms. Further variables pooled identify clinical electrophysiological variants, used treatments, outcomes. The certainty diagnosis verified using Brighton criteria. RESULTS: identified total 109 cases. Ninety-nine cases had confirmed infection an average age 56.07 years. period symptoms neurologic manifestations for 12.2 d. predominant electromyography variants classical sensorimotor acute demyelinating polyneuropathy respectively. Forty required intensive care, 33 mechanical ventilation, 6 complicated death. CONCLUSIONS: Studies on COVID-19-related commonly reported frequent facial palsy. time onset infectious suggests mechanism. Early important as it might associated severe disease course requiring care ventilation.
